Part 2
An Improvisation with Percussion and Dance
The staging of a traditional piece of Egyptian dance with tabla solo in which the dancer and the percussionist give proof of their mutual understanding and sense of humour in a refreshing performance.

The Karaoke
An instructive karaoke including nine rhythmic patterns, designed to take information learned in the interview one step further in a straightforward educational exercise.
An original system of musical notation created specifically for this project marks the beats of the tabla in real time as Khamis plays the rhythms in different variations and patterns.

Sobre Khamis Henkesh

Criado en el seno de una familia dedicada tradicionalmente a la música y al espectáculo, Khamis Henkesh vino a nacer en la popular calle de los músicos y bailarinas: Mohamed Alí de El Cairo. Su carrera musical comienza desde muy pequeño tocando junto a su padre y hermanos. Años más tarde fundaría una escuela para niños en la misma calle que le vio nacer.
Artista autodidacta, compone, interpreta y dirige sus propias obras. Graba numerosos discos de percusión en solitario y como músico de estudio ha participado en innumerables sesiones con los intérpretes y cantantes más prestigiosos de la música oriental. En cuanto a sus actuaciones en directo se ha podido disfrutar de su arte tanto en teatros como en Festivales del mundo entero. “La tabla es mi vida, mi amor. Gracias a ella he viajado y he visto mundo, sin ella no hubiera conocido nada”.
Considerado como uno de los mejores percusionistas de Oriente Próximo, ha renovado la percusión oriental a pesar de pertenecer a la vieja escuela. Mediante su personal revisión de temas tradicionales ha revolucionado la percusión oriental y abierto el camino a numerosos músicos y artistas

“El arte que sale de mí es el Nilo, el Nilo es el alma que me hace sentir la música, la percusión. Lo que brota de mí es el Nilo”.
