“The name Moisés Sánchez has been making itself heard for a few years now, due to his elegant and sophisticated style… he displays an enormous range which at times reminds you of a young Keith Jarrett.”
Diario Folk
Moisés P. Sánchez is a restless musician, at home in a broad spectrum of musical styles. His eclecticism is borne out by his outstanding portfolio of projects as a pianist, composer and producer. Moisés P. Sánchez is an important voice in the European jazz scene today.
As a self-taught musician, his personal approach to understanding and studying gives rise to a unique conception of his instrument and the music he makes. This has led him to adopt an expansive perspective on improvisation, arranging and composing. It has also enabled him to see beyond stylistic frontiers. He has played symphonic rock from the 70’s, classical and contemporary music and bring them all into his approach to jazz.
The breadth of his palette is illustrated by the range of his recent works which include an interpretation of Stravinsky’s ‘Rites of Spring’ and a symphonic work based on the Electra myth for the Spanish National Ballet (both commissions). He has recorded five albums under his own name. The penultimate (‘Metamorfosis’, 2017), was the deserving winner of the best jazz album prize in the Spanish MIN awards and in the US Indie Acoustic Awards. After Metamorfosis he is releasing a recording of his most ambitious project to date, ‘Unbalanced’: a large ensemble work originally based on the music of Leonard Bernstein.
His collaborations include Placido Domingo, Benny Golson, Jorge Pardo, Chuck Loeb and a long etc. His main influences in jazz piano include Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett y Brad Mehldau as well as younger generation players such as Tigran Hamasyan, Aaron Parks and Craig Taborn.
The music of Moisés P. Sánchez is remarkable for its personality: it achieves an enigmatic balance between his love of risk, elegance and the empathy with his surroundings. His new work “There’s Always Madness” deals with madness, as an impulse for creativity and, at the same time, origin of the worst atrocities. It is to be recorded later in 2019.
“There are few who can reference such a range of composers in a single piece. Since his arrival on the scene in Madrid, he has broken all the rules and overturned all prejudices, playing better than anyone could have expected at his age.”
Luis Martín, Director del Festival de Jazz de Madrid
