Nieves Hidalgo, a flamenco singer of Andalusian origin, takes us on a musical journey to traditions that communicate with one anther from distant shores. In these old melodies life is celebrated, love is found and is lost. These are songs which, in times past, children learned from their parents’ mouths; a custom which hardly survives in the modern world.
Nieves and her artistic companions in this project have chosen a series of intimate songs whose rhythms and roots are found in Andalusia and Northern Spain, such as bulerías, tangos and panaderos. With their profound stories and their musical forms anchored in flamenco, these songs are rescued from obscurity and presented anew to the public, magnificently enriched and harmonised by the skill of two great contemporary musicians.
Raúl Olivar is a flamenco guitarist and composer closely associated with the folkloric music of his region, Castilla. With his guitar he contributes an intimate understanding to the selection and restoration of the repertoire. The trio is completed by a guest artist, a virtuoso oriental musician, who enriches the project from his own musical tradition, conferring the sensitivity with which he is able to express and share intense emotions in diverse musical contexts.
The voice of Nieves Hidalgo soars over the rich flamenco rhythms and the mellifluous accompaniment of these two great musicians, laden with emotion: powerful and pure when she cries out, sweet and sensuous when she is subdued, Nieves demonstrates her sublime skill in expressing the soul of these popular songs which the trio delights in performing.
